The onus is now on our built environment to prioritise sustainable building practices.
Many studios and architects are leading the charge, creating beautifully designed facilities that also incorporate sustainable features. These types of projects are exactly what the Multi-Residential Dwelling category at the Sustainability Awards aims to recognise.
To be considered for the category, architects are invited to submit designs for new townhouses, duplexes or residential complexes that contain multiple dwellings, classified as Class 2 or Class 3 buildings. The design must prioritise efficiency and consider the potential for repurposing or using recycled materials to reduce the environmental footprint of the build.
Last year’s winner of the Multi-Residential Dwelling category was Terrace House, designed by Austin Maynard Architects. Terrace House is a 100 percent fossil fuel-free building that takes a revolutionary approach to housing, delivering community-focused, sustainable homes that are environmentally, socially and financially responsible. The project reimagines suburban life by emphasising shared childminding, communal gardens, neighbourly lending and borrowing, and other social connections.
The unique site of the project - a long block measuring 10 metres by 57 metres - inspired the design to emulate traditional terrace house plans with homes featuring large external outlooks, front verandahs, studies, and a shared "backyard" on the roof. The building achieved an impressive 8.1-star rating, equivalent to a 6-star Green Star rating (considered world-leading) and 'Platinum' LEED and BREEAM 'Outstanding' classification.
