Australia hasn’t hosted a Summer Olympics since 2000. It took a mammoth effort to produce the Sydney Olympic Park precinct, and with Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, it’s time to begin planning.
Legislation and planning measures have been made in preparation for what’s to come. Concept designs for the transformation of The Gabba have already reared their head. But ultimately, the surface has barely been scratched in regard to what the river city will look like in the next nine years.
The Sustainability Summit session titled, “The Road to Brisbane 2032: Creating a Legacy of Sustainability & Social Amenity in 21st Century Sports Infrastructure Design”, will put the spotlight solely on sports infrastructure in Brisbane.
Presently, sports buildings suffer from technological deficiencies, leading to less economic and efficient construction and maintenance. Brisbane, with its population poised to double by 2050 and its rising stature as an Olympic city, is drawing developers keen on leveraging the city's potential for development.
2022 Sustainability Summit
The discussion is a deep dive into employing the tenets of placemaking and human-centred design to carve out a lasting impact in architectural and property outcomes within the built environment. The key themes explored include adaptive reuse, embracing low to no-carbon approaches, leveraging innovative technologies, utilising environmentally friendly materials, and designing spaces with longevity in mind.
The panel brings together experts in the field. Ivana Simkovic, a dwp Principal and sports expert, joins the stage alongside Hamish Lyon, NH Architecture Director, Mick Stevens, CEO of Timber Queensland (representing TimberLink), and Joshua Marks, Holcim’s National Products & Services Manager. Their collective expertise promises to shed light on innovative strategies and solutions. The panel discussion is skillfully moderated by Emma Heffernan, Associate Professor of Architecture at USYD.
