Two certification milestones for Knauf
Knauf Australia is proud to have achieved two major sustainability milestones in the past year: a triple ISO certification for all its manufacturing operations and recertification to GreenTag Standard Version 4.0 for a range of their products.
ISO certification
In 2019 Knauf became the first organisation in the gypsum industry in Australia to have achieved a triple ISO certification for all its manufacturing operations.
Last year the manufacturing and distribution facilities at its Bundaberg plant received certification to the most current ISO management system standards for Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental Management.
These standards had previously been achieved by Knauf’s plants at Altona (VIC), Matraville (NSW) and Beenleigh (QLD).
ISO is an independent, non-governmental, international organisation that ensures the quality, safety, and efficiency of products, services and systems by developing and maintaining a set of standards.
Certification is achieved after an independent audit that assesses the organisation against the criteria of the standards. It is not a one-off process; certification actions are ongoing with regular surveillance audits every year by the independent auditor, as well as re-certification audits every three years.
Knauf has now achieved the following certifications:
- ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management systems
- ISO 14001:2015 certification for environmental management systems
- OHSAS 18001:2007 certification for health & safety management systems.
A new international standard (ISO 45001:2018 health & safety management systems) has been released and will replace OHSAS 18001 / AS/NZS 4801. We will be transitioning to this new standard towards the end of 2020.
GreenTag
In the past year a range of Knauf’s products has been recertified to the GreenTag Standard Version 4.0 and these products have achieved GreenRate Level A certification, which equates to 100% of the credit points available in Green Star rating tools’ Sustainable Products credits.
“We are proud of having achieved the GreenRate Level A for our Opal plasterboard, TruRock and TruRock HD, Designpanel and the Shield Range (comprising of MastaShield, FireShield, WaterShield, SpanShield, SoundShield, MultiShield and CurveShield),” said Knauf’s National WHS and Sustainability Manager Kathryn Walker.
“Sustainability is very important to Knauf and we have society and the environment in mind with everything we do. Having GreenTag certification for a range of our top products, and ISO certification for our manufacturing operations, supports us in achieving our sustainability objectives,” Kathryn says.
Kathryn adds that third party certification has become a standard requirement for specifiers who build towards Green Star ratings. “These certifications mean that our customers can be assured that our products tick the Green Star boxes.”
