Australian Disabled Access Consultants negotiated an assisted entry
access solution and access management plan for a restaurant fit-out on Oxford
Street, Bondi Junction in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Australian Disabled Access Consultants arranged a compliant fit-out
design that facilitated assisted entry disabled access into and within the restaurant
located at Shop 6, 310-330 Oxford Street.
Designed by Two Form Architecture & Interior Design of Surry Hills, the
fit-out provided assisted entry into and within the restaurant for people living
with disability.
Australian Disabled Access Consultants’ scope of work included providing
disabled access design advice to ensure compliance with the principles of the
Disabilities Discrimination Act 1992, Waverley Council’s Development Control
Plan accessibility guidelines, Part D3 of the Building Code of Australia and the
Disability Access to Premises Standards 2010, and Australian Standards AS1428.1-2009,
AS1428.2-1993 and AS1428.4.1-2009.
The restaurant is located in a recently constructed multi-storey mixed
development retail and residential building with multiple tenancies. The restaurant
has two floor levels separated by two internal steps near the front entry
doorway, preventing an internal step-less pathway of travel.
The disabled access and wheelchair access guidelines were considered for
continuous safe pathway of travel into and within the restaurant’s customer
floor area; the principal front entry doorway; internal circulation areas; door
and window glazing; existing and new doorway widths and circulation areas; pathways
of travel widths and heights; and fitments.
Australian Disabled Access Consultants prepared the disabled access
assessment report for the fit-out’s compliant design elements and congratulated
Two Form Architecture & Interior Design for its innovative fit-out design
techniques to improve disabled access and wheelchair access within the
restaurant.
Additionally, the restaurant’s internal steps prevented a smooth pathway
of travel within the shop to the customer service counter area.
Australian Disabled Access Consultants prepared an assisted entry
alternate solution supported by an access management plan for facilitating disabled
access to enable people with a disability to reach the customer food display
and the service counter in an equitable, dignified and safe manner.
Implementing this plan would satisfy the principles of the Disability
Discrimination Act and the disabled access objectives and provisions of Part D3
of the Building Code of Australia and the Disability Access to Premises
Standards 2010.
