Project Background

In the Bellgrove Subdivision Development Project, Moddex collaborated directly with the developer, Bellgrove Rangiora Limited (BRL) in joint venture with Ngāi Tahu Property, to deliver a crucial safety barrier solution. The new development featured a shared path running through the subdivision, including four bridges spanning stormwater swales. To ensure safety and compliance, these bridges required a robust and compliant barrier system for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Moddex provided our Bikesafe BS40 bikeway system, our standard barrier with a smooth deflection rail for NZTA Compliance. The barrier infill was required for F4 Safety from Falling Compliance (NZBC) with the deflection rail for pedal clearance to help prevent or mitigate injury for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Selecting Moddex for a compliant, customisable, and aesthetic barrier solution

Moddex products were selected on this project because of our ability to supply an NZTA B6.4 compliant, proprietary and pre-engineered barrier system that perfectly suited the project’s requirements. Our BS40 bikeway system offered an ideal off-the-shelf solution, while our capacity for customisation allowed us to seamlessly integrate the design with the concrete pillars at either end of the bridges, ensuring a neat and presentable finish. Additionally, our extensive range of powdercoat options enabled the client to choose a colour that complemented the surrounding environment, thereby enhancing the overall aesthetics of the project.

Overcoming design challenges and ensuring safety in barrier integration

One of the key challenges we encountered was the requirement to incorporate the barrier system into the concrete pillars, as specified by our client. To address this, we held a meeting to thoroughly discuss these requirements, review designs, and examine plans. Our team conducted multiple site visits and worked closely with the engineers to ensure that our design would not only meet safety standards but also align with the overall aesthetic of the project. This collaborative approach enabled us to develop a solution that ensured the barrier was seamlessly integrated with the concrete pillars. It was crucial to eliminate any snag points to maintain the safety of cyclists using the pathway.
