Case study: Natural haven

Located in the highest Bushfire Attack Level – Flame Zone (BAL-FZ), the owners of this property wanted to create a welcoming residence surrounded by nature and forest. An important part of the brief were large glazed areas and stacker sliding doors to easily access outdoor areas, as well as a 1400mm wide timber and glass entrance door.

Case study: Bangalley - bushfire safe

At the edge of a cliff, this house has to endure storms, salt and bushfires. Important to the clients were energy-efficiency, comfort, views and inside-outside living. Some elevations were assesssed as BAL-40 while others were rated the highest Bushfire Attack Level Flame Zone that requires tested, approved and compliant BAL-FZ products.

Case study: Beach Retreat

Set on a 45 degree steep slope, this home renovation and addition is in the highest Bushfire Zone BAL-FZ and high wind area. The building rests on 43 poles, and is built over several levels with difficult access. The design brief asked for very large, glazed, movable elements without a corner post, opening the house to the ocean.

Case study: Clifton Hill Passive House Primary School

This building had a strong sustainability and health agenda: it had to be highly energy efficient to Passive House standard, achieve high sound protection, and meet stringent safety requirements and fall prevention. It included an extra large glazed window of 35m2, required barrier free thresholds for doors and French doors.

Sense of Space

High energy-efficiency, security, and large and easy to operate sliding doors were required to achieve a lightness of the building and indoor-outdoor feeling of openness. The large northfacing bay window had to be constructed with the smallest possible joint for double-glazing to maximise the views.

AWS bushfire tested windows and doors

In response to devastating bushfires, Australian Standard AS3959 has been updated and republished. AS3959-2018 is primarily concerned with improving the ability of buildings in designated bushfire-prone areas to better withstand attack from bushfire thus giving a measure of protection to the building occupants (until the fire front passes) as well as to the building itself.
