NCC 2022 and glazing in homes

With Building Ministers confirming the NCC 2022 as proposed we will see a significant turning point in the energy efficiency improvements of our built homes going forward. 1st October 2022 has seen the full release of the NCC 2022, however Stage 1 (excluding Energy Efficiency, Condensation and Livable Housing sections) will be adopted from the 1st of May 2023 and Stage 2 with the three delayed sections adopted from the 1st of October 2023.

State Governments also need to confirm their individual adoptions and if any variations are required for their States and Territories. To date, New South Wales and Victoria will adopt the NCC 2022 as is.

New minimal thermal performance requirements mean the performance of our new built homes will be set to the equivalent of a 7 star NatHERS rating. The ultimate purpose being more comfortable homes, all year round, help improve the wellbeing of those living inside and reduce the demand on heating and cooling energy loads – which in turn reduce energy bill costs and such reduction in energy demand reduces our carbon emissions.

AGG conducted an in-depth analysis of NatHERS simulations to uncover the effect on Glazing when changing to a 7 star NatHERS built home. We modelled 3 common house types across Sydney (East and West to represent the two contrasting climates), Melbourne and Hobart climate zones. By fixing conservative non-glazing fabric we then changed only the Glazing to uncover an easy and cost effective solution to the new requirements.
