Architectural practice OMA has broken through Venice’s tough conservation barriers, and was recently approved – after five years pending – to go forth with a project to renovate a 16th century palazzo for the fashion retailer Benetton near the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal.

Tianjin, China 

GMP Architekten has won a competition to design a 1.2 million-square-metre exhibition centre for Tianjin, China. With 400,000 square metres of exhibition space, the National Convention and Exhibition Centre will be one of the largest exhibition centres in the world and will be constructed in the west of the city between the historic centre and a development zone on the coastline.

New York, United States 

An umbrella-shaped structure that can rebuild ice caps in the Arctic has been awarded first place in eVolo Magazine’s 2013 Skyscraper competition, a search for radical concepts of vertical architecture. The ‘Polar Umbrella’ project submitted by Derek Pirozzi, works by reducing the heat gain of the surface of the ice and freezing ocean water.

Chaoyang, China

Edinburgh-based Sutherland Hussey has finished work on the 4,710m² Jade Museum in Chaoyang in China Liaoning Province. The archaeological museum encloses a large circular burial chamber at the centre of the 5,500-year old Niuheliang settlement. UNESCO is now considering naming the Iron Age find a World Heritage site.

Japan

Japanese architect Toyo Ito has been awarded the prestigious 2013 Pritzker prize. The 71-year old has created an array of buildings, distinguished by their maze-like arches, wavy columns, and ‘norm-defying’ elements. The sixth Japanese architect to win the prize, Ito had reportedly been considered a leading candidate for years by outside observers.
