An Australian with roots in Scotland, and a qualified geologist with extensive experience in Western Australia’s gold fields, Noreen Byrne is now a principal at interdisciplinary design practice Hames Sharley, where she is driving a transformative approach to People & Sustainability.

For Byrne, it’s a natural evolution.

“My passion lies in people and transforming workplaces for the better,” she says. “My science background has shaped my perspective and prepared me to think critically, strategically, and holistically.”

Speaking about her experience working in the Western Australian gold fields on long-term mapping and exploration projects, she says, “Those months in remote, isolated environments were invaluable. They taught me not just about geology but about people, teamwork, and the workplace dynamics that can make or break an organisation. That experience stayed with me and spurred a passion to improve how workplaces function.”

Today, Byrne brings her scientific rigor and extensive experience across health, defence, and media to Hames Sharley.

“I focus on supporting the full lifecycle of both the business and its people, creating an integrated and sustainable approach to work,” she says.

For Byrne, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is at the core of Hames Sharley’s operations and success. “ESG underpins everything we do. It’s a guidepost for ensuring our design outcomes align with our purpose and vision while maintaining the highest ethical standards,” she says.

Representing the industry at COP26 in Glasgow, her hometown, as a participant in the landmark UN Climate Change Conference was something that highlighted the importance of proactive leadership in addressing climate challenges and inspired her to guide organisations towards innovative solutions that align with global sustainability goals.

At Hames Sharley, Byrne is inspired daily by the practice’s vibrant, creative culture.

“Working alongside passionate architects, designers, and technical experts is invigorating. Their dedication to their craft reminds me why this work matters,” she says.

Looking forward, she is excited about advancing diversity, inclusion, and women’s leadership within the organisation. “There’s immense potential to bring in diverse talent and broaden our perspective as an industry. It’s about opening doors in innovative ways, fostering inclusivity, and supporting the next generation.”

Observing that culture and purpose are the foundations of success, Byrne adds, “When culture aligns with the business model, you create an environment where people choose to be, not just work. That’s what we’re building at Hames Sharley.”
