Architect Marco Spinelli chose Schüco window systems to seal out noise at a house located under a major flight path. This award-winning addition to a grand South Australian sandstone villa specified premium Schüco aluminium window systems to optimise the home’s design and functionality.
The Architects Ink project won the Residential – Houses (Alterations & Additions) category and the John Schenk Award in the 2022 South Australian Architecture Awards.
The homeowners sought a contemporary lifestyle with a strong connection to the home's expansive north-facing rear yard and accommodation for their extended family.
The project is located deep within its site and clearly delivers on its brief without impacting its heritage streetscape. The addition takes up the site's full width to give all living areas and bedrooms a northern aspect to the garden, pool and tennis court.
However, another primary driver for the design was the home's location beneath a major flight path.
So, while many clients want their homes to open fully, Spinelli says this was not important in this instance. The homeowners focused on a strong visual connection to outdoor spaces while sealing out noise and optimising cross ventilation and security.
Spinelli designed the addition with in-situ concrete walls and roofing to protect the home environment from background aviation noise.
"The structure then needed sealing with high-performance acoustic windows, so we worked with window specialists KR Installations to design and specify Schüco window systems," Spinelli says.
The resulting design used multiple fixed windows, a pair of sliding doors, and tilt-and-turn windows strategically located for cross ventilation.
Schüco's extremely slim profile and capacity for large expanses of glazing ultimately enhanced the home's external connections. At the same time, the tilt and turn systems provided the homeowners with the flexibility and functionality they required.
"As architects, we want to see as little of the window frame as possible; Schüco's design and performance are fantastic – you can have huge windows and less aluminium. Our clients were also delighted they could remotely control their Schüco windows and doors, opening and locking them via home automation.
"I would love to use Schüco in all of our designs."
