DIGILIN Australia was engaged to design and manufacture a significant part of the lighting system and controls at the Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC).

Comprising three distinct yet seamlessly integrated buildings, this iconic Australian venue is one of the world’s most modern, flexible and technologically advanced convention centres spanning 20,000sqm of multipurpose space.

Working with their South Australian distributor HI Lighting, Digilin knew that the $400-million redevelopment would involve some very ambitious design elements and require state-of-the-art technology along with one-of-a-kind custom solutions.

Digilin’s expertise was deployed into various critical zones of the building to deliver the best possible performance and ongoing reliability. For instance, the house lighting for the Plenary Hall required an LED solution with smooth dimming to ensure show starts have a good fade to black, and show finishes don’t end with an abrupt ‘lights on’ function.

While Digilin had considerable experience in delivering this outcome for theatre lighting, the convention centre’s large space with high ceilings was the biggest challenge to date. After some serious engineering, a 170W LED highbay with custom smooth dimming DALI drivers was selected to light up the space, with this world-first solution leading to outstanding outcomes.

Another space that has drawn attention is the ACC’s Plenary Hall where the Starry Night system has been installed. This is the largest fibre optic starfield in the world with over 42,000 light points. Each light point is carefully located within panels underneath seating banks, which are raised when the venue is in function mode. The system uses different sized fibre optic cables illuminated by the Titan series lightsource as well as a scintillation wheel for a realistic night sky effect. This impressive lighting feature provides the perfect ambience for functions, and is fast becoming the preferred backdrop for premier events in the region.

Digilin’s linear LED, downlight and driver technology is deployed in many other areas of the venue, providing engineered lighting solutions with seamless control.
