Expella received two accolades at the 2020 Good Design Awards, Australia’s peak international design awards and the highest honour for design and innovation in the country. While Milu Odourless toilet received a prestigious Good Design Award Best in Class accolade, Expella’s humidity sensor received a prestigious Good Design Award Gold, both awards in the Product Design Hardware and Building category in recognition of outstanding design and innovation.
Considered the most prestigious international awards for design and innovation in Australia, the annual Good Design Awards celebrate and honour the best new products and services on the Australian market, excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design, design strategy, social impact design and young designers. Projects recognised with a Good Design Award must demonstrate excellence in good design.
More than 55 Good Design Awards Jurors evaluated each entry according to a strict set of design criteria covering ‘good design’, ‘design innovation’ and ‘design impact’.
Expella director Wes Quick said, “We are thrilled to have been recognised in this year’s Good Design Awards for both our Milu Odourless toilets, and our humidity sensor switch. We are passionate about creating healthy home environments for our customers, and it’s an honour to have our products recognised by the wider design industry.”
Milu Odourless Toilet – Best in Class Good Design Award
Milu Odourless toilets feature an in-built ventilation system that quietly extracts odours from the toilet bowl and discharges them directly into the sewer before they can be released into the bathroom. The result is an odour-free environment that increases comfort and wellbeing in the home and reduces the need for harmful aerosols.
The Good Design Awards Jury noted: “A clever blend of design and technology innovation brought together to resolve an age old problem. This has the potential for significant commercial impact on the toilet market, particularly in commercial fit-outs that tend towards in-wall cisterns. A potential game-changer for this market. True design innovation that solves a problem and has the potential to make a positive impact on the quality of our lives.”
The Good Design Award Best in Class accolade represents the pinnacle of design excellence in each sub-category and the very best projects within the Awards. From a record 835 projects submitted to the Good Design Awards this year, only 34 of the most outstanding products qualified for the Good Design Award Best in Class accolade.
Expella Humidity Sensor – Good Design Award Gold
Developed to detect high levels of humidity in a confined area such as a bathroom or laundry, and automatically activate an exhaust fan, Expella’s humidity sensor is slimline and discreet (about the size of a downlight), and easy to install. The humidity sensor provides permanent control of humidity levels in the home, and gives homeowners and landlords alike peace of mind that moisture and mould are being kept at bay.
The Good Design Awards Jury praised the humidity sensor, commenting: “Clean looking and nicely detailed – an elegant balance of form and function. Smart application of automation with simple yet fit-for-purpose design that eliminates unnecessary exhaust fan running costs. All homes should have these installed in wet areas. No fuss design for a functional product – well done.”
From a record 835 entries, only 152 projects qualified for a Good Design Award Gold Winner accolade, representing excellence in design at every level.
