Fabritecture was contracted for the design and construction of the canopy at the Elizabeth Quay Ferry Terminal in Perth's CBD.

Part of the Elizabeth Quay redevelopment project, which would transform the promenade around the river inlet into an iconic area for the public, the feature canopy was designed to provide shelter for passengers embarking on the Elizabeth Quay TransPerth Ferry system, as well as add an aesthetic element consistent with the design intentions of the entire development.

The Elizabeth Quay Ferry Terminal ETFE canopy is an award-winning iconic piece of fabric architecture on the Perth waterfront. Fabritecture’s scope of work included structural steelwork, aluminium cladding and ETFE pneumatic two-layer cladding.

Design intent

The client sought a bespoke structure that sheltered the ferry patrons from sun and weather, but also provided an art feature structure that adapted harmoniously to the waterfront theme of the Elizabeth Quay redevelopment. The cladding material for the canopy also needed to be conducive to LED night lighting and custom printable with artwork that emulated the surrounding backdrop of the Swan River.

Cladding material selection

A 2-layer pneumatic ETFE system was selected instead of traditional glass for the canopy cladding, offering significant weight reduction and cost savings, while allowing custom printing and seamless LED night lighting integration. The canopy's design incorporated a local artist's custom artwork, which was printed onto the ETFE cushions, providing shade and a visually appealing element that harmonised with the surroundings. The 2-layer ETFE cushion system also featured an air supply system.

Structural system

The cantilever system's structural design featured large steel columns and was clad with custom architectural aluminium panels, creating a clean, wavelike aesthetic effect.

Installation

There were highly complex fixing details between the truss system, aluminium cladding panels, ETFE extrusion system, gutters and drainage systems comprising the structure. Fabritecture completed 3D modelling of all components parallel with the detailed design to ensure compatibility, with the model divided into three disciplines: steelwork, cladding and ETFE. Complexities and challenges in the project were also addressed through coordination of various services, and adherence to a tight installation schedule.

The Elizabeth Quay Ferry Terminal Canopy has become an exemplary architectural accomplishment, highlighting how innovative thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration can lead to exceptional outcomes. This revolutionary project, which has earned industry recognition, demonstrates the value of pushing the boundaries of design and embracing cutting-edge materials and technology to create memorable and impactful public spaces.
