The Meat & Wine Co.
With restaurants located in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and Mayfair, London, The Meat & Wine Co. is the go-to venue for perfectly paired Australian farmed steaks and premium world-class wines. Guided by an Afro-centric inspired aesthetic and underscored by each site’s unique Australian setting, the spirit of ‘Ubuntu’ – giving and sharing – embodies each space.
Designing the interior of The Meat & Wine Co. Bella Vista required this same dedication to honour its culture with traditional architecture, motifs and patterns, and was carefully brought to life by the noted design trio, Callie van der Merwe, Roberto Zambri and Calvin Janse Van Vuuren from Design Partnership Australia.
Design Collaboration
An articulate design story required specific fixtures and fittings throughout, with a flooring base that would complement and enhance the space without overpowering. The team had a very specific idea about a look that would anchor the design, but it also needed to meet stringent health and safety measures and be durable enough to counter years of busy foot traffic.
Landing on the visual appeal of sisal, a rustic and highly textured natural fibre, the task was to create a sisal/hessian look carpet with commercial hospitality performance capabilities. With a reputation for delivering highly complex flooring solutions across all commercial sectors, the designers were confident the GH Commercial team would be able to develop just what they needed.
"A hessian carpet print was developed for an authentic natural fibre carpet and developed into a carpet, which would be commercially viable and suitable for the wear and tear that restaurants face daily. Working with GH Commercial, over a period of 4 months, a bespoke carpet was developed just for the project using their Designer Jet Sheet range. We chose this product due to the design flexibility it offers whilst being commercially rated, giving us peace of mind that it would last compared to using a natural fibre-based carpet," Zambri explained.
The finished product, a flecked and texturally rich all Australian Made carpet in burnished, ochre tones, supported the unique golden and copper feature patterned breeze block wall. Woven rope light pendants designed by Design Partnership Australia and made in South Africa bring a warm ambient atmosphere to the restaurant. Together, this tells a beautifully rendered story about the brand ethos being African Pride.
