The Māwhera Pā, Pounamu Pathway, a world-class tourist attraction, has been unveiled in Greymouth, New Zealand. Created by Poutini Ngāi Tahu in collaboration with Wētā Workshop, this $34-million project is the first of four Māori-led West Coast museums. Its primary aim is to narrate the stories of Poutini Ngāi Tahu, highlighting the unique history and culture of the region.
The immersive Pounamu Pathway takes visitors on a journey through 1000 years of history on the rugged West Coast. The exhibition comprises six compelling narratives, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. By putting Māori storytelling at the heart of the project, the pathway emphasises the cultural significance of Pounamu (greenstone) and its importance to Poutini Ngāi Tahu. The project has received strong emotional and cultural resonance from the community, with positive reactions from whānau during the pathway's dawn blessing ceremony.
The Pounamu Pathway's design and architecture are key components of its success. Wētā Workshop played a crucial role, utilising a team of 300 creatives to craft a unique storytelling experience using modern technology, audio, video, and sculpture. The architecture and interior design, orchestrated by RM Designs, is deeply rooted in cultural symbolism. Inspired by the pake (Māori rain cape), the building's design creates a unique and culturally relevant architectural form.
GH Commercial's custom woven carpet further enhances the cultural ambiance. The carpet incorporates Māori whakairo (carving) and peitatanga (painting) art forms, reflecting traditional Kowhaiwhai motifs. The design, conceptualised by artist Fayne Robinson, is a combination of motifs from Ngati Wae Wae and Makaawhio who collaborated on the project, adding depth to the cultural experience. Made from an 80/20 wool blend, the carpets combine comfort and durability, ideal for high foot traffic areas in public spaces such as The Māwhera Pā.
In refining the woven carpet design for the project, meticulous research and thorough testing were crucial. We carefully examined three colour options, each using three different yarns, to achieve the desired architectural aesthetic. This process underscored the importance of the right scale in bespoke design, especially for unique floor patterns. Detailed renders helped us determine precise layouts, optimise carpet usage and minimise costs – vital considerations for designers. This careful approach ensured flawless design integration, ultimately enhancing the project's architectural appeal.
The Māwhera Pā, Pounamu Pathway is a groundbreaking project that seamlessly integrates cultural storytelling with modern design and technology. Every aspect, from the architectural design of the building to the flooring selection, has been meticulously considered to reflect and honour the people and culture of Poutini Ngāi Tahu. This attention to detail sets a high standard for future cultural attractions, promising to instil pride in the local community and captivate visitors from around the world.
