In November 2023, modulyss launched a charity project focusing on neuro-inclusive design for Carden Nursery & Primary School’s sensory classrooms. Architects and designers from all over participated and entered the competition.

The brief was to redesign a classroom tailored to the needs of neurodiverse children. There were an incredible number of ideas submitted, but the winning idea came from Elizabeth Loizou and Lucy Rees from Tétris Design & Build. They won the design competition with their thoughtful concept of what a neuro-inclusive space should be: safe, sensory-friendly, and welcoming to all.

This redesign project was more than just a charitable initiative; it was a call to action for the design community.

“We challenged architects and designers to rethink traditional educational spaces and consider the unique needs of neurodiverse children,” modulyss stated.

One year later, and after much dedication and collaboration, the redesigned classroom is completed and ready to welcome the children.

The vision: Designing with purpose

The classroom has three zones with fluid boundaries to engage the five senses of touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound. Neutral colours were prioritised to create a calming atmosphere, and soft and accessible materials ensured safety and comfort. The use of rounded zoning and natural elements also supported the wellbeing of the children.

Why neuro-inclusive design matters

The powerful message from this project is that it is essential to design for neuro-inclusivity. Spaces such as classrooms need to be welcoming for all and accommodate the diverse needs of every child, especially those who are neurodiverse.

The classroom at Carden Nursery & Primary School is a testament to what can be achieved when design keeps inclusivity in mind.
