When a design-minded couple moved back from New York to Los Angeles, they decided to remodel their home to meet their vision for a space that was modern, warm and uncluttered.
The full gut remodelling was designed by Colega Architects based on the clients’ brief seeking a home where they could keep doors and windows open throughout the year. Without adding a square foot, the existing house was transformed into a modern home with custom features.
Located in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, the Crestridge residence features a compressed foyer leading to the redesigned great room. The existing roof was fully removed to create a vaulted ceiling. The interior layout was reorganised with the central great room as the hub and two private sleeping wings located on either side of the house.
Throughout the day the spaces in the house are constantly changing with the natural light. Drawing from mid-century modern influences, the interior is designed with a variety of textures, colours and natural light. Custom walnut cabinetry and panelling form the backdrop for the couple’s artwork while souvenirs and memory filled knickknacks are on display on built-in shelving throughout the house.
Alabastro chevron flooring from Havwoods, geometric tiles and textured accents from the couple’s furnishings complete the fabric of the interior.
The great room features a five-panel pocketing sliding door system that disappears into the adjacent wall. When open, the extents of the interior space seamlessly blend to the exterior. The once dark and constricted interior is now a space to enjoy the view and gathering, inside and out.
The architects have transformed the Crestridge residence into a warm, modern sanctuary for the family as they transition and get reacquainted with the Southern Californian way of life.
