Transparency to impact
Over the years, Holcim has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability, empowering progress for people and the planet. Delivering transparent and verifiable information on the environmental impacts of our products is a key objective of our sustainability strategy. To achieve this, Holcim ensures a range of products are covered by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) through EPD Australasia.
Road to an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
An EPD communicates transparent data on the life cycle impacts of our products and other relevant environmental information. These documents and associated datasets are independently verified.
This data allows construction companies and builders to make quick, informed decisions about the sustainability of the materials they choose. When budgeting and planning a commercial or residential construction project, this information helps professionals make decisions that balance costs with long-term environmental considerations.
Since we published our first Ready-Mix Concrete EPD in 2017, we have released 34 EPDs, enabling our customers to build with greater confidence, knowing they can responsibly manage the environmental impact of their projects. Today, the majority of our product ranges are covered by an EPD, with products across all our business streams represented.
Through EPDs, Holcim launched its proprietary low-carbon concrete range, ECOPact, which is a minimum 30% reduction in embodied carbon compared to the Australian Life Cycle Inventory (AusLCI) value for standard ordinary Portland cement concrete.
“Transparency and credibility remain the foundation of our sustainability strategy. By expanding our range of EPDs, we empower our customers to make more informed and responsible choices, and prepare for a more accurate reporting of embodied carbon from our products,” says Cyril Giraud, Head of Sustainability, Holcim.
Holcim remains committed to the continuous delivery of EPDs, aiming to expand the coverage of product ranges and make updates according to the requirements set out by EPD Standards.
