Endura all-in-one rubber stair treads from iRubber were chosen for the open steps of the Origin Energy Building at 321 Exhibition St.
While refitting the old building, the aim was to have the best in sustainability and energy efficiency.
With a 10-year gurantee, the rubber used in the Endura stair treads is unique in that it has a self-bleeding wax, so it doesn’t need extra waxing and polishing.
Cleaning of the stairs becomes easier with only damp mopping or the occasional scrub needed. This will lead to a huge saving on costly cleaning chemicals over the 15 to 20 years of which Endura is expected to last.
Good acoustic qualities are provided by the rubber, and the round texture and VI abraded strip provides safety due to its anti-slip properties.
Two colours with contrasting visual inserts were chosen for the project – black/brown and light grey for the 20 floors.
The live vertical garden right up the entire building next to the Endura rubber stair treads is considered the tallest greenwall in Australia.
The project won a Landscape Architecture award in the Melbourne Design Awards 2012.
