As a part of Victoria’s largest-ever single investment in upgrading specialist schools, Nelson Park School in Bell Park, Geelong was one of 39 specialist schools selected to share $388.8 million in 2020-21.
The $10 million funding has enabled the school to upgrade and modernise school infrastructure, delivering the next stage of the school’s masterplan, and cementing one of the overarching goals of the Victorian School Building Authority – to make Victorian education more inclusive, and cater better for students with disabilities or special needs.
Of particular interest, Moddex was specified by Spaces Architecture to supply and install an Ezibilt™ pre-engineered ramp, walkway and stair solution (EB120) accompanied by Assistrail® disability handrails (AR120).
Seeking an alternative to traditionally constructed accessibility ramps, the architect opted to specify the Ezibilt modular access ramp as the primary structure. In addition, ModWood Xtreme composite decking was selected to clad the deck of the ramp, achieving the highest level of slip resistance P5 (AS 4586:2013). Also, Intac tactile indicator pads were installed at transitions to help pedestrians who are blind or visually impaired navigate their surroundings, warning them of changes to the environment such as slopes, stairs or a difference in surface.
What is an Ezibilt accessibility ramp?
Ezibilt is a pre-engineered, modular ramp, walkway and stair solution that replaces traditionally constructed accessibility ramps and stair entries with compliant handrails.
Traditionally welded accessibility ramps are typically a time-consuming, costly and elaborate process that relies on hot works, lengthy installation timeframes and extensive specification.
The Ezibilt ramp, walkway and stair solution is comprised of pre-engineered modules, and equipped with adjustable platform heights and the ability to install each modular ramp, step or walkway component in various configurations on level as well as sloping site terrains of 26° to 45°.
Ideal for projects that require fast-tracked installation to meet short timeframes, Ezibilt speeds up the design and install stages by ensuring compliance and modular flexibility in the event of onsite changes, spec discrepancies or any other obstacles.
Ezibilt is accompanied by comprehensive BIM content library access. Architects, engineers, and designers can streamline their design processes by accessing pre-engineered components, precise measurements and material specifications directly within their design software with just a few clicks.
Why was Moddex chosen?
Ezibilt was selected for the accessibility ramp project due to its versatile design tailored for compliance with wheelchair accessibility standards and regulations. With its ability to accommodate various site conditions, including heights up to 4m, Ezibilt offers a durable solution with a design life of up to 50 years.
Offsite fabrication and easy onsite installation with basic tools ensure rapid delivery and minimal disruption during construction. Additionally, Ezibilt’s compatibility with Moddex handrails enhances safety and compliance while enabling easy relocation, making it an ideal choice for projects requiring adaptable, long-lasting accessibility solutions. Beyond speed, ease of installation and specification, Assistrail disability handrails and Ezibilt are inherently designed to suit accessibility compliance with Australian Standard AS 1428.1:2021, Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), National Construction Code (NCC) and the New Zealand Building Code.
