The redevelopment at John XXIII College in Mount Claremont, WA, includes a new two-storey administration block alongside major and minor refurbishments works to other parts of the college.
Mortlock’s Spotted Gum Trendplank and Proplank systems are featured in the new Administration building, the Ignatian Centre (Library), and the new covered walkways.
Timber screening provides environmental control and also contributes to logical wayfinding and orientation for the newly orientated campus. This screening form indicates the new ‘front-door’ to the visitor on arrival. The battened screen will silver with time, assisted by a Sioo:x coating, and sits comfortably within the College’s restrained material palette as a result.
In contrast, the voluminous staff collaboration space on the first floor of the building has been treated with a warm timber-lined ceiling throughout. This warmth is celebrated via a clerestory, which allows natural daylight to wash the surface of the timber in a range of ways throughout the day and year.
Similarly, the top-lit additions to the Library, containing an external classroom and new student common room, are lined from floor to skylight in our Spotted Gum Proplank system.
As there were no fire ratings to be met, internal Trendplank Spotted Gum cladding, factory-coated with clear Cutek oil was used to achieve the desired colour tone.
