An intumescent steel coating product from Nullifire SC 900 Series was selected for the exposed structural columns and beams during the redevelopment of the Carrara Gardens Golf and Tennis Academy in Queensland.
Owned by KDV Group, a leading name in the Russian snack food market, the Carrara Gardens Golf and Tennis Academy is a world-class coaching facility and part of the wider Carrara Sports Precinct, which will host many events during the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games. The coaching facility is home to 24 tennis courts, a 9-hole golf course, driving range, gymnasium, aerobics facility and café.
Shiro Architects was given the brief to redesign the facility and make it a world-class complex ahead of the Games. Seeking to make the most of the natural environment, lead architect Hiromi Lauren Shiraishi came up with an airy, transparent design that would show off the beautiful scenery.
Following the approval of designs, Alder Constructions was appointed to undertake extensive redevelopment of several aspects of the facility. The redesign included the creation of a beautiful open space, which will keep the facility relevant and stylish for years to come. However, the open design intent meant that several structural columns and beams needed to be left exposed, which also meant that they needed to be fire rated.
Alder Constructions worked with Cozens Regan Williams Prove Consulting Engineers to select Nullifire SC902 as the ideal structural steel fire protection solution. The intumescent film was applied in a two-coat process to achieve a higher level of finish.
Key outcomes of the project included fire rating of 111 CHS and SHS steel columns; usage of 632m² of steel; and application of 3200kg of SC902 intumescent coating.
