Porous stone from StoneSet Permeable Paving was specified for the new water play feature at the Westfield Shopping Centre in Coomera QLD. This installation is the latest in a series of projects executed for Westfield Shopping Centres on behalf of Scentre Group.
StoneSet has been previously installed at Tea Tree Plaza in Modbury SA, and car park surrounds at Westfield Kotara NSW.
Called ‘the backyard’, the Coomera project is essentially a children's waterpark within a shopping centre, which features public BBQ facilities, children’s play area, hammocks and children's play facilities.
StoneSet’s application in this project aimed to create an incongruous ‘dry transition’ between the water pumps and the pond area, allowing water to flow ‘underground’ from one area to another.
StoneSet’s permeable paving was particularly suited to this application since the stone and resin would be permanently submersed in water, which was an important consideration during the design phase. StoneSet resin is not degraded by water or chemicals (such as chlorine) found in these public fountains. The application is similar to many StoneSet installations for pool surrounds over the last decade.
Additionally, the porous stone meant that water from children splashing or making waves in the pond would be seamlessly returned to the water table.
StoneSet’s Brisbane installer applied a mix of Tan Bundaberg, Apollo, Cudgee Yellow and Cream to form an authentic bush themed ‘creek bed’ surrounded by stones and filtering the water.
With its high traction R11 slip rating, StoneSet is perfect for shopping centres and other public areas. The resin bound natural stone also eliminates any need for maintenance and significantly naturalises the urban environment. Shopping centres also benefit from the fully porous surface, which does not allow puddles to form during rain or algae to grow in darker areas.
The stone finish assures durability over time since UV rays do not degrade the surface colour or binding resin.
