Officially opened in March 2024, the Macquarie University Law School, housed within the prestigious Michael Kirby Building, provides state-of-the-art facilities including the first-of-its-kind floating moot court, designed by Hassell Architects.

The moot court allows students to take part in simulated court or arbitration proceedings. As with normal courtrooms, moot court acoustics should also allow for clear sound, with no reverberations or echoes, creating an optimal setting for discussions, presentations, and oral arguments, which are essential for legal training.

SUPACOUSTIC panels

Hassell chose SUPACOUSTIC panels for the feature ceiling in the floating moot court. The use of a high-performance acoustic product ensures that all participants are able to hear the proceedings clearly. For aesthetic appeal, the SUPALINE profile was used in the popular Fusion Maple finish. This timber colour also allows for a light and bright interior that comes with additional learning benefits.

This building is a stunning addition to the Macquarie University campus and a significant achievement in terms of architectural design and functionality. Named in honour of the jurist and human rights advocate, The Honourable Dr Michael AC Kirby CMG, this state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to legal education and provides a modern learning environment that fosters academic excellence.

The project benefitted from strong collaboration between SUPAWOOD and Hassell Architects, ensuring a smooth process from start to finish and resulting in a beautifully finished product that meets the high standards expected in a leading educational facility.

Joe Murray of Hassell Architects commented: “The finished project looks beautiful. We highly recommend SUPAWOOD for their customer service; we had no problems, and they were very helpful and responsive, and the awesome quality of the product.”

The Macquarie University Law School and the Michael Kirby Building have gained visibility by being featured on the Hassell website, highlighting their architectural significance. While the building has not yet received formal nominations for awards, its design excellence and innovative features stand out within the industry.

This project is currently longlisted in the education project category of the Dezeen Awards 2024.
