The Rockefeller Foundation has announced a '100 Resilient Cities Centennial Challenge' - a three-year, $100 million prize competition which will invite 100 cities from around the globe to hire a Chief Resilience Officer and create a ‘resilience plan’ - pre-emptively sketching out how they would address climate risks, natural disasters and storms.

One World Trade Center in New York has become the world's third-tallest building after topping out at a height of 541 metres. A 124-metre steel spire was installed last Friday, pushing the skyscraper's height to 1776 feet – a number commemorating the year of America's independence.

Batumi, Georgia

Harvard-educated architect Giorgi Khmaladze has completed a unique new McDonald’s in the Black Sea port city of Batumi, Georgia. The spaceship-like building tears away from the traditional McDonald’s model and was designed to have a limited environmental impact. It features 460 glass panels surrounded by a reflecting pool, and a inconspicuous petrol station.

Oxford, England

Herzog & de Meuron has won planning permission for the £30 million Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University. Masterplanned by Rafael Vinoly, the school will be built within the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter and will appear as a stack of discs decreasing in size, unevenly aligned to create overhangs and terraces.

Minnesota, United States

The Minnesota Vikings football team have unveiled plans for a new $975 million energy-efficient stadium. Designed by HKS Sports & Entertainment Group, the stadium will feature the world's largest transparent roof, zinc framing and walls of glass. The new facility is set to be complete by 2016 in time for the NFL playing season.
