Australian Architectural Hardwoods is committed to the ethics of a sustainable industry with a series of measures in place to minimise their impact on the natural environment.
The company achieves operational sustainability through processes that have been put in place for responsible energy and water use, efficient waste management of both organic and inorganic waste, and greening of the factory site.
Energy Use
Australian Architectural Hardwoods uses a 100 kilowatt solar array as their primary electricity source. The company also generates sufficient electricity, depending on the prevailing weather conditions, to export to the grid.
Sewage Waste
All grey sewage water is processed on-site by the in-house envirocycle system. The treated effluent is used to irrigate the native bush and rainforest regeneration areas on the site.
Wood Waste
All untreated sawdust and shavings are composted and used as a soil conditioner.
Local Environment
Australian Architectural Hardwoods is located on a 20-hectare site with 75% of the area consisting of an existing mature eucalypt forest while 10% is being revegetated following a main roads acquisition. Over 2000 trees have been planted as part of this process.
Heating and Drying without Fossil Fuels
Timber for the heating and drying processes is kiln-dried when required in a solar panel heated kiln or a waste wood fired kiln.
Inorganic Waste
Each year, the company recycles about 50 tonnes of metal extracted from timber, including steel, aluminium, stainless steel, and copper.
Water Use
Rainwater harvested from the roof of the manufacturing facility is utilised for wood processing, reforestation irrigation, and internal factory use with zero dependence on mains water.
